COAST is currently accepting applications from CSU undergraduate and graduate students for travel support to present the results of original research at marine, estuarine and coastal-themed scientific meetings and conferences, or special thematic sessions of more general scientific meetings.

A total of $23,000 is available for student travel support. Approximately half of the funds will be awarded for travel occurring between July 1 and December 31 2012, and half of the funds will be awarded for travel occurring between January 1 and June 30 2013.
Key Dates & Information -
Application Deadline: None—Applications will be accepted on a continual basis until all funds are awarded. Applications must be submitted no less than 60 days before initiating travel.

Project Title: Benthic Habitat Mapping, Point Mugu Sea Range – San Nicolas Island
Responses to this Request for Statements of Interest will be used to identify potential investigators for a project to be funded by NAVAIR which provides professional and technical support for its Integrated Natural Resources Management Plan in order to facilitate successful implementation of the Sikes Act. Approximately $970,000 is expected to be available to support this project.

Social Science Division Student Travel Awards
The Social Science Division is offering a limited number of travel grants, up to $200 each, for undergraduate students presenting the results of research that they have conducted at a regional or national, discipline-specific meeting during the academic year 2011-12. Award recipients are required to acknowledge CUR for support of their travel in their talk or poster. After the meeting, a brief report about the experience is expected. Minority students are encouraged to apply. Eligibility Criteria: Undergraduate student must be a junior or senior, student’s mentor must be a CUR member or the student’s home institution must be a CUR institutional member, and student’s home institution must match the travel grant. Applications for a travel grant to a spring 2012 meeting are now being accepted. Award decisions will be made on a first come, first serve basis. National Park Service Student 12-Week Climate Change Internships
Please visit the National Council for Science and Environment Website (link below) to learn about NPS 2012 internship opportunities. This program provides paid 12-week internships related to various aspects of climate change in national parks - research and monitoring, communication, interpretation and education, adaptive management, mitigation, etc. The internships are for 18 to 25 year olds, and generally have a requirement of undergraduate academic achievement or promise.
This year there are 26 interships in parks and central offices all around the National Park system - including some opportunities locally in California. The internships pay $12/hour in the parks and $14/hour in Washington, D.C. program offices. Most internships are during the summer months, though some will occur in the fall and early winter.

American Educational Research Association (AERA) Announces 2012-3 Funding Opportunities
In our efforts to strengthen the pipeline to education research, The American Educational Research Association (AERA) announces its 2012–2013 fellowship programs and funding opportunities for undergraduate students, graduate students, and early career scholars. These programs provide mentoring and funding support to develop research skills and conduct studies in education related fields and topics. The National Park Service and the UW College of the Environment are pleased to announce the 2013 George Melendez Wright Climate Change Youth Initiative.
This program provides opportunities for young people to work on diverse issues related to climate change and its effects in national parks. The opportunities take two forms – competitive fellowships awarded to advanced graduate students (Masters and Doctorate levels) to support their independent research, and paid internships in which undergraduate or beginning graduate students work for approximately 12 weeks on projects in research, interpretation, park operations, policy development, or other fields.

The Grand Teton Association and Grand Teton National Park offer a graduate fellowship of up to $10,000/project for graduate studies focused on documenting the almost intangible and disappearing aspects of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, including Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks, the John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway, and other public or private lands. Emphasis areas are lesser-known ecosystem elements such as air and water; geologic or other processes; plants, insects, reptiles, or amphibians, fungi; natural soundscapes; and social science related to public understanding of natural resources and their use or management.
Graduate students pursuing either a Master’s or Doctoral degree are invited to submit proposals by February 15, 15, 2013.
