Whenever possible, HEIF employs students to help us design proposals and implement projects, as well as managers to oversee the whole process. We welcome students from all disciplines and majors. If you don't see anything that fits you, check back often, as we hire a variety of positions every semester.

Outreach Manager

The Humboldt Energy Independence Fund is hiring a student to help publicize the organization, our projects, and our events. HEIF would like to see more (and more diverse) student involvement, and we believe a good publicist can generate increased awareness and interest in our activities. At the institutional level, HEIF and HSU would also like to better share our green initiatives with other universities and organizations.
The ideal candidate would market HEIF on campus through a variety of channels: flyers, websites, social media, classroom presentations, tabling, events, chalking, blogs, news articles, etc. He or she might also work with HSU Marketing & Communications to produce outreach materials for a broader public audience.
The position is open to all enrolled HSU students, but prior experience with marketing, outreach, public relations, or similar is desired. Relevant coursework in marketing, communications, graphics, and related fields is helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Publicize major HEIF events/dates/projects (several times per year)
    ○ Making and posting flyers, posters, brochures, etc.
    ○ Making in-class announcements to students in different majors
    ○ Tabling on the quad
    ○ Writing and distributing press releases to local newspapers and radio stations
    ○ Chalking on campus
    ○ Highlight current/significant HEIF projects in our outreach efforts
  • Maintain HEIF’s online presence with current events, news, job announcements, and project updates (ongoing, 1-2x per week)
    ○ The HEIF website needs to stay current, informative, and accurate
    ○ HEIF’s Facebook page can be used for additional marketing around specific events
    ○ Other websites can be utilized as per your judgment
  • Produce and distribute marketing materials such as brochures, flyers, posters, etc. (as necessary)
  • Serve as HEIF’s representative to other student sustainability groups on campus and within the CSU system (as necessary)
    ○ Attend sustainability group meetings as schedule permits
    ○ Assist HSU Marketing & Communications with publicizing news and events involving HEIF
    ○ Attend other HSU sustainability organization meetings (time permitting)
  • Attend HEIF meetings (weekly)
    ○ Weekly HEIF Manager Meetings
    ○ Biweekly HEIF Committee meetings
    ○ As needed, meetings with specific HEIF groups to understand their outreach needs
  • Represent HEIF at off-campus conferences (1-3x per academic year)

Desired Skills

  • Writing: Clarity, brevity, ability to summarize technical information or meeting minutes
  • Public speaking
  • Graphic design, familiarity with the Adobe Suite or similar
  • Familiarity with press releases and public service announcements
  • Website maintenance and content creation
  • Familiarity with social media marketing
  • Organized and able to meet deadlines
  • Independently motivated
  • Good communication skills
  • Familiarity with and interest in renewable energy concepts

Hours:  Flexible schedule; 6-10 hrs/wk during semester

Wage: $11.25
