Irish National Debate Team

Founders Hall
Winners of the Irish Times Debating Championships will hold a public debate against Humboldt State’s top student debaters on March 25 at 7 p.m. in Founders Hall, Room 118 on the HSU campus. The motion chosen is “This House regrets the rise of a ‘hookup’ culture.”

The three-person team from Ireland will support the motion, while three representatives of HSU will speak in opposition.

The visit by the Irish team comes as part of a tour of U.S. colleges and universities that the debaters earned by winning a tournament sponsored by the Irish Times newspaper. Representing Ireland will be Kieran O’Sullivan, a graduate of University College Cork, now at the Law School of Ireland and training as a lawyer with LaSociety of Ireland; Dearbhla O’Sullivan, a graduate of University College Dublin and now at the Law School of Ireland; and William Courtney from the University College Dublin Medical School. Other stops on the Irish tour include visits to Boston (Cape Cod College), Miami (University of Miami and Florida International University), Flagstaff, Ariz. (Northern Arizona University), and Whitworth College in Spokane, Wash.

Humboldt State will be represented by Sammi Rippetoe, a senior Communication major and the current team captain of the HSU Intercollegiate Debate team, Felicia Asbury, graduating with an Interdisciplinary Studies degree with a focus on Iinternational Globalization Studies, and Erin Lewis-Lusso, who graduated magna cum laude at the end of last semester with a degree in Communication.

The debate offers both a challenge and an opportunity for the HSU program. Gregory Young, the Director of Intercollegiate Debate at HSU said, “The Irish debaters are always very bright, very entertaining, and very skilled, but Humboldt’s debaters also have skill and experience to bring to the contest.”

Young said the motion for the discussion should also be of interest to HSU students and the Humboldt County community. “The motion was one debated recently at the World University Debating Championships and provides an interesting foundation for sharing ideas about our cultures,” he said.

A “hookup culture” is one in which people are more likely to form casual relationships based on physical intimacy than in the past, and somewhat less likely to exclusively seek long term relationships based on emotional intimacy.
