Lusting After Language: Linguistic Explorations in Meaning, Identity, and Change

Van Duzer Theater
English professor Kathleen Doty is a recipient of HSU's 2012-13 Excellence in Teaching Award.

As the formal study of language, linguistics has much to say about how language shapes and influences our everyday lives. Language is essential for understanding the world. We
signify where we live and cultures we’ve encountered through our language. We can conform to, rebel against, and perhaps change societal expectations through the words and phrases we use.

This presentation will explore three concerns common to university and public life: how meanings are made and unmade, why changes in language are inevitable, and why language use is key to our social identities.
