Biological Sciences Seminar Series

Time: 4:00 pm-5:00 pm

Description:

The Biology Department welcomes you to the next seminar presented by Dr. Matthew Smith from the University of Florida. The title of his talk is "Ecology of ectomycorrhizal fungi in the Guiana Shield region of South America – a molecular perspective?”

Dr. Matthew E. Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Plant Pathology and the curator of the UF Fungal Herbarium (FLAS) at the University of Florida. His research focuses on fungal ecology, evolution, and systematics and he has worked extensively on the biology and systematics of hypogeous fungi (“truffles”) and the ecology of plant-symbiotic ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi.

His work combines the synergistic use of molecular, morphological, and culture-based methods in both
laboratory and field settings. Dr. Smith’s talk “Ecology of ectomycorrhizal fungi in the Guiana Shield region of South America – a molecular perspective” will detail the results from an NSF-funded study to document the ecology, diversity, and systematics of ectomycorrhizal fungi from the neotropical Guiana Shield region of South America (in collaboration with HSU professor, Terry Henkel). More details about this ongoing project can be found at www.tropicalfungi.org.
