Biological Sciences Seminar Series

HSU Campus
All are welcome to this Friday's biology speaker series. Dr. Lisa Dabek of the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, WA, will present "Conservation biology of an elusive endangered tree kangaroo species."

Tree kangaroos are the only members of the Macropodidae family that are arboreal. They are primarily folivores, dependent upon rainforest habitats. Tree kangaroos are only found in Australia and the island of New Guinea, and the majority of species are threatened due to overhunting or habitat loss. This seminar will focus on the Matschie’s tree kangaroo, Dendrolagus matschiei, an endangered species endemic to the Huon Peninsula of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea has some of the last major rainforest habitats in the world. Dr. Dabek will describe her ecological studies of D. matschiei as well as the conservation efforts to preserve the rainforest habitat of this elusive animal.
