Coastal Naturalist Training

Center Activities and Friends of the Dunes invite you to participate in this semester's Coastal Naturalist Training. This extensive program is designed to educate interested community members about local coastal habitats. The four-week training includes classroom and field sessions with topics that cover dune botany, salt marsh ecology, Wiyot history, marine ecology, wildlife, restoration, land management, interpretation, and much more. Sessions are led by experts, including professors, geologists, botanists, historians, and long-time naturalists. Participants will finish the training with a rich knowledge of Humboldt's coastal environment and a well-rounded understanding of stewardship efforts.

Sustainable Futures: “Timber Harvests and Managed Forests: Good or Bad for Climate Change?”

As part of the Sustainable Futures Speaker Series, Dr. Bill Stewart will present “Timber Harvests and Managed Forests: Good or Bad for Climate Change?”

Bill Stewart is a Cooperative Extension forestry specialist based at the University of California Berkeley since 2007. He is also the director of the Center for Forestry that oversees Berkeley’s research forests and the co-director for the Center for Fire Research and Outreach. His research and extension efforts focus on defining and promoting sustainable forest management activities that will have both local and global benefits. Before completing his PhD in California forestry, he spent a decade working in Asia on forestry and rural development projects.

The Sustainable Futures Speaker Series is presented by the Environment & Community Graduate Program and the Schatz Energy Research Center.
