All day	Southern Humboldt Bay Wildlife Refuge Kayak Tour HSU Center Activities Join Center Activities on Saturday, April 6th for a unique and scenic paddle tour in the southern end of Humboldt Bay which is part of the Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. This is an area rich in wildlife, including migratory shorebirds, egrets, herons, raptors, harbor seals and more! Additional information will be mailed upon registration.
All day	Registration Deadline: Women's Intermediate Surfing HSU Center Activities Are you ready to get out of the whitewater and surf real waves? Join Center Activities Saturday, April 6th for the continuation of our Women's Introduction to Surfing course with a progression of skills from paddling out to the line-up to negotiating the waves. Surf gear is provided, or you are welcome to bring your own. Transportation will be by carpool.
6:00 pm-7:30 pm	Science on Tap Blondie's Food and Drink Dr. Christopher Harmon of the HSU Chemistry Department presents, "Quantum Mechanics, LASERS, and Atto-second Technology." The whole of quantum mechanics can be summarized in a relatively small set of postulates, theorems, and ideas; however, the consequence of these ideas paints a rather bizarre picture of the physical universe when compared to our everyday experiences. Even so, the predictions made from quantum mechanics are remarkably accurate when compared to experimental observations, which indicates the universe is a much stranger place than one might expect! Join us as we explore this very strange, very quantized, universe in a discussion of theories constructed from quantum mechanics and modern applications of quantum mechanics such as LASERS and atto-second technology.
7:00 pm	Disability Culture Film and Workshop Siemens Hall Does disability have a culture? The idea might seem strange, especially on this campus where people with disabilities don't tend to come together to use disability as an identity platform. Elizabeth Hassler and CouRaGeouS present a space that might help that shift! This workshop explores our preconceptions of disability and culture through the lens of an emerging "disability culture" movement. So often disability is conceived as harm, or lack: can it also be known as a place of lived experience from which people can make art? What the heck would a "disabled aesthetic" mean, anyway? Using our experiences together with the "Disability Culture: Research in Motion" documentary as a starting text, we will examine our collective knowledge of disability/culture and see how it interacts with the viewpoints presented in the film. We will also experiment with creating collective knowledge about and from our bodies, and discuss what it might mean to view our bodies as cultural artifacts. Everybody and all perspectives/prior knowledge welcome! All media used will be captioned and the Siemens Hall bathrooms are gender-binary and mostly wheelchair accessible.
