Humboldt State University’s 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award recipients are Clifford Allenby (‘59, Economics, Psychology), Ellie Cachette (‘06, Political Science), Robert Henry (‘67, Social Science) and Rick Rosenthal (‘67, Zoology).

Join the Distinguished Alumni Award winners for a roundtable discussion hosted by Department of Politics chair Noah Zerbe. The talk, titled “What can I do with my major after graduating? How far can it help me and what is my potential graduating from HSU?” takes place in the Great Hall from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 19. The event is free and open to the public.

Distinguished Alumni Award winners will also be recognized at the Humboldt State Honors dinner on April 19. The event is invite only.

HSU Campus
HSU Police will be conducting brief fire evacuation drills for select buildings on campus.

Whenever you hear a fire alarm, exit out the closest exit and evacuate calmly to the Rally Point outside your building. Do not use elevators, assist others and report people who are in need of help to your Building Evacuation Team member or to emergency personnel.

This testings is conducted annually in the spring and in the fall.

Professor Barbara Curiel Poetry Reading

Library Fishbowl
Humboldt State University professor and award-winning poet Barbara Curiel will give a poetry reading on Friday, April 19, at 3 p.m. in the Library Fishbowl, Room 209.

Curiel, a San Francisco native and a specialist in Chicano and Latino studies, is the winner of the 2012 Philip Levine Prize for her forthcoming collection, Mexican Jenny and Other Poems, to be published this fall.

The prize takes its name from the Poet Laureate of the United States 2011-2012. Levine is a Pulitzer Prize and two-time National Book Award winner renowned for his poems about working class Detroit.

A graduate of Mills College and Stanford University, Curiel earned a Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is an HSU professor in the Departments of Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and in English. She teaches creative writing, American literature and Chicano/Latino and feminist studies.

Continuing its year-long exploration of 20th century music, this Guitar Ensemble concert includes music from famous video games, African rhythms and spaghetti western style. Directed by Nicholas Lambson, produced by the HSU Music Department.

Too Many Sopranos

Studio Theater
Opera Workshop performs Edwin Penhorwood comic opera about four sopranos who must go to hell to bring back tenors and basses (i.e. men) for the soprano-heavy heavenly choir. $10/$5 students and seniors. First 30 HSU students admitted free for each performance.
Opera Workshop is directed by Elisabeth Harrington, produced by HSU Music Department
