Biological Sciences Seminar Series

HSU Campus
All are welcome to this week's seminar speaker. Dr. Carolyn Tepolt, of Stanford University, will present, "Physiological and transcriptomic adaptation in the globally invasive European green crab."

European green crabs (Carcinus maenas) are considered one of the world's worst invasive species, and have been highly successful across a wide range of temperatures – from Newfoundland to Australia. Because they thrive in such diverse environments, they make an excellent system in which to study local adaptation.

This project combines cardiac physiology and next-generation sequencing to examine thermal tolerance, gene expression, and gene sequence at seven locations in the species' native European and invasive North American ranges.

FST outlier analyses detected several candidate genes likely under selection between environments. Despite high gene flow and acclimatory plasticity, green crabs do appear to be partially locally adapted to their environments both physiologically and genetically.
