Beginning Guitar

HSU Recreation and Wellness Center
This weekly group lesson will go beyond basic instruction in guitar, offering participants the opportunity to learn and understand the language of music theory. The proven techniques from G.I.T. will assist you in learning to hear, to play, and to enjoy music with an understanding of how music theory works. Skills to be covered include: developing finger independence, scale steps, keys, notes on the fret board, and a working knowledge of the common language used in music. So whether you have some experience and need to develop confidence, or are a beginner ready for a positive learning experience in music, this class will be invaluable. Each individual will be evaluated the first night to determine the best level of instruction and will receive more information about the content of the class, including where to rent instruments if you do not own one.

Join the ranks of our ancestors and learn to spin and ply yarn on a handspindle, then transfer your newly learned skills to a spinning wheel. Learn about the many yarn variations and types of projects a particular style can best be used for. As knowledge about fibers is essential, samples of wool, silk, quivet, plus more fibers from 5 continents will be introduced, handled and discussed while wool from Humboldt County's Fibershed will be featured for spinning. Textiles are an integral part of our past, present and future. Storytelling about humankind's 20,000 year history of discoveries and use of fibers and spinning developments will be woven throughout the content of the class. This class is designed for beginners who have never spun yarn and will be valuable to handspinners wanting to build their knowledge and skills.
