Samoan Siva Dance Demonstration and Lesson

Time: 12:00 pm-1:00 pm

Description:

As part of the Pan-Asian Pacific Islander Perspectives festival, A.P.A.S.A. presents: Learn Samoan Siva Dance with Alina Randall.

Siva Samoa is a traditional Samoan dance from American Samoa. The dance was originally performed by high chiefs, but today is performed by the chiefs' families. Performing a Siva is honorable as it retains the dancer's grace, culture, and respect for high chiefs and the Samoan culture. Sivas are usually performed at weddings, baptisms, and funerals, but chiefs can ultimately decide if and when his family will perform a Siva.
