DESCRIPTION:Coinciding with School Psychology Awareness Week, Nov. 12-16, 
 school psychologist Elvina Charley, co-chair of the Multicultural Affairs
  Committee of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), wi
 ll deliver “Resiliency in Cultural Identity: In Beauty it Shall Be Rest
 ored."\n\nCharley will discuss the importance of recognizing students’ 
 cultural strengths in concert with the Navajo “Beauty Way,” which ref
 ers to achieving a healing balance among the emotional, mental, physical 
 and spiritual dimensions of life. She will also highlight the importance 
 of recruiting Indigenous school psychologists.\n\nSchool Psychology Aware
 ness Week was developed by the NASP to raise national awareness of the pr
 ofession of school psychology and its role in K-12 school communities. Th
 is year’s theme is “Know Your Own Strengths - Discover Them, Share th

 traveling exhibit "Wherever There's a Fight," a history of the civil righ
 ts movement in California Sept. 23 to Nov. 18.\n\nThe exhibit is based on
  the award-winning 2009 book "Wherever There's a Fight: How Runaway Slave
 s, Suffragists, Immigrants, Strikers and Poets Shaped Civil Liberties in 
 California," by Elaine Elinson and Stan Yogi.\n\nThe HSU Library will hos

DESCRIPTION:Down the Hill Home: Art by Rick Bartow is featured at Humboldt
  State University’s Native American Arts Gallery and on exhibit Sept. 2
 7 through Dec. 1.\n \nBartow, a member of the Wiyot tribe of Northern Cal
 ifornia, focuses in this exhibit on his two-dimensional drawings, paintin
 gs and prints on loan to Humboldt State from the Froelick Gallery in Port
 land, OR.\n \nWorking in expressionistic style, Bartow blends a variety o
 f drawing materials and paints to create imagery that explores human and 
 animal forms, Native American transformation stories, global mythology an
 d personal experiences.\n \nBartow’s art has been featured in exhibits 
 nationally, internationally and throughout the Pacific Northwest. His mos
 t recent work, a 20-foot wooden sculpture of chiseled and carved poles ti
 tled “We Were Always Here,” debuted this month at the Smithsonian's N
 ational Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. His work is als
 o part of the collections of the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and
  Western Art, the Heard Museum, the Hallie Ford Museum, the Portland Art 
 Museum, the de Saisset Museum, and the Westfalisches Landesmuseum in Muns
 ter, Germany.\n \nA reception for the artist will be held later this fall
  at a date and time to be announced.\n \nNative American Arts Gallery hou
 rs are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday noon to 5 p.m., Thursday noo
 n to 7 p.m. and Saturday 10 to 2 p.m. The gallery will be closed on Oct. 
 18 between 5 and 7 p.m. and on Monday, Nov. 12. It is located on the grou

 NITE! The Art of Sustainability through November 15, 2012 with an opening
  reception on Thursday, October 18 from 4-6 p.m.\n\nIGNITE! The Art of Su
 stainability is a traveling exhibition that features the work of thirteen
  of California’s leading environmental artists. Using photographs, pain
 t and video as well as effects such as smog and particulate matter on por
 celain, the artists communicate “a heightened connection to their natur
 al surroundings,” according to the website exhibitenvoy.org. Their work
  displays the rich variety and extremes found in California’s numerous 
 ecological regions.\nThe exhibit is result of a series of statewide ecolo
 gical workshops sponsored by the Green Museums Initiative of the Californ

DESCRIPTION:The first two class meetings will be devoted to introducing mo
 re information about the use of color. You will create two more paintings
 , each incorporating a different type of color scheme, one analogous and 
 the other triadic. The final two weeks you will utilize your previously a
 cquired skills to create a full-color fantasy painting, story illustratio
 n, or abstract piece combining organic and inorganic elements on a full s
 heet of watercolor paper. There will also be a special video presentation
  on the technique of Fresco Painting. Previous watercolor experience is r
 ecommended.

 campus? HSU’s Holiday Food Drive is taking place through Thursday, Dec.
  6th!  \n\nAll donations collected on campus will be given to the Humbold
 t County Food Bank Food for People, for distribution to over 10,000 low i
 ncome children, families, people with disabilities, and seniors a month.\
 n\nThis year, we are encouraging clubs, student organizations, university
  departments, faculty and staff to participate in the HSU Hunger Fighter 
 Challenge. One winning club/student organization and one winning departme
 nt with the most donations will be invited to celebrate with a spaghetti 
 dinner next semester. Each winning team may select 4-6 members to attend 
 the meal. To enter the Hunger Fighter Challenge, place food donations in 
 a strong bag and attach a note with the name of your club and contact inf
