Helpful tips and resources when learning in online environments.
Learning in a distribute format is new to many students. The challenges and opportunities that arise in an online or hybrid course are in many cases different than in a traditional face to face course. However, many of the challenges and opportunities are the same when it comes to success in school. Following is a list of tips for a rewarding and enriching online/hybrid learning experience. 1. Be Active and Engaged
Learning in any format can be among the most rewarding experiences in life. When learning in a distributed format it is important to make connections to your fellow students and your instructor. Take advantage of the opportunity to meet people who may live in a very different place than you. Interact in the discussion forums and give your all in group activities. By engaging fully in your course you are helping to create a learning community, one that may live on far longer than the short life of the course.
2. When in doubt, ask your instructor and ask your colleagues
There are few things more frustrating and demotivating in a course than not understanding the expectations of the instructor or a particular assignment. If you find yourself lost, then ask and ask again until you find the help you need. Being aware of due dates, assignments, and instructor expectations in regards to class activities is your responsibility. Often, instructors will have a Q and A forum to ask specific questions about the course. Take advantage of these resources and always check for your instructor’s office hours.
3. Take time to understand the syllabus
Your syllabus is the road map for the course. Read, re-read, go get a cup of coffee, then read the syllabus again. Understanding the syllabus is often the first predictor of success in a course. Many instructors place the syllabus in an easy to find location in Moodle. If you have questions about the syllabus, read tip number 2 above, then go ask your instructor. A quality learning experience depends on it.
4. Develop a routine, discover your favorite spot.
One challenge of being able to learn from anywhere is that often you can be at the mercy of the noises and distractions that surround you. It is good idea to locate a quite spot in your house/apartment or quiet little corner of a coffee shop to participate in your course. One additional advantage that many online courses offer is that you are able to work whenever you like. However, this can be overwhelming to those who like structure. Setting specific time aside in your day to work can help you make time for other things in your life while still fully participating in class. For example, schedule 1 or 2 hours every Tuesday and Thursday evening to take part in discussion forums or work on a paper. Developing a routine can help balance a very busy life.
5. Understand the technology
Many courses rely on Moodle for asynchronous (different place, different time) communications. Others utilize Elluminate for synchronous (same time, different place) for real time webcasts.
