Cre­at­ing dig­i­tally is a sim­ple and sat­is­fy­ing expe­ri­ence when you uti­lize the tools and func­tions of Adobe Cre­ative suite 6 (CS6): Pho­to­shop®, Illus­tra­tor®, InDe­sign® and Dreamweaver.® Learn the tech­niques for inte­grat­ing Illustrator’s crisp line capac­i­ties and state-of-the-art Pho­to­shop effects, then eas­ily import and manip­u­late from within the dynamic page lay­out pro­gram of InDe­sign or pub­lish to the web with Dreamweaver. Though each course is offered as an intro­duc­tion to the appli­ca­tion, the instruc­tor is knowl­edge­able and able to answer advanced questions.

Earn an HSU Office of Dis­tance & Extended Edu­ca­tion Adobe Cre­ative Suite Cer­tifi­cate of Com­ple­tion* upon com­ple­tion of any three classes (Pho­to­shop and Illus­tra­tor, plus either InDe­sign or Dreamweaver). These Adobe courses will each be offered at least once per aca­d­e­mic year.

Though not required, upon enroll­ment in any of the courses and with the pur­chase of an HSU ID card ($5), you will be eli­gi­ble to pur­chase the aca­d­e­mic ver­sion of the Adobe CS6 soft­ware from the HSU Book­store at a sub­stan­tial savings.

Stu­dents work indi­vid­u­ally on Mac­in­tosh com­put­ers. Knowl­edge of com­puter basics required.

Intro to Adobe Photoshop®

Adobe Pho­to­shop CS6 is the quin­tes­sen­tial imag­ing appli­ca­tion for dig­i­tal cam­era enthu­si­asts, pro­fes­sional pho­tog­ra­phers and other dig­i­tal media artists.

This fast-paced course, aimed at all users from begin­ners to pro­fes­sion­als, offers an intro­duc­tion to basic dig­i­tal image repro­duc­tion and tools, as well as hands-on expe­ri­ence learn­ing the pow­er­ful fea­tures of Photoshop’s image-editing strate­gies and techniques.

With on-screen demon­stra­tion through­out, you will com­plete a series of sup­plied exer­cises uti­liz­ing layer masks and adjust­ments, paint­ing, repair­ing, fil­ters and effects. Tech­niques learned in Pho­to­shop are eas­ily trans­ferred to Pho­to­shop Elements.

Intro to Adobe Illustrator®

Illus­tra­tor is used exten­sively for logos, posters, busi­ness cards and sta­tion­ary, tech­ni­cal and free-form illus­tra­tions, as well as quick-to-load web images.

Based on in-class demon­stra­tion uti­liz­ing hands-on expe­ri­ence, you will com­plete a vari­ety of sup­plied exer­cises famil­iar­iz­ing you with the effi­ciency of auto-tracing, draw­ing and edit­ing dig­i­tal images with pen tools; flow­ing type to paths; con­vert­ing any pho­to­graphic image to out­lines; apply­ing spe­cial effects and paint­ing with color, tex­tures and gra­di­ents. You will also learn the diver­sity and ease of work­ing on layers.

Though this is an intro­duc­tory course for all lev­els, you will be intro­duced to sev­eral advanced Illus­tra­tor tricks and capa­bil­i­ties. Draw­ing skills are not needed; in fact, Illus­tra­tor offers every­one the oppor­tu­nity to cre­ate beau­ti­ful art­work with no prior draw­ing skills.

Intro to Adobe InDesign®

Learn the sim­ple and effec­tive page lay­out pro­gram that not only offers the advan­tage of inte­grat­ing and edit­ing images from Pho­to­shop, Illus­tra­tor and Acro­bat, but also sim­pli­fies pub­lish­ing fea­tures to suc­cess­fully print all your newslet­ter, online and printed book projects.

This class is a hands-on explo­ration into the InDe­sign page lay­out, type and linked image fea­tures. You will learn the use of tools, menus and pan­els to cre­ate sin­gle and com­plex multi-page doc­u­ments. Basic typo­graphic ter­mi­nol­ogy will be defined and applied, includ­ing spe­cial text effects.

Through a series of in-class exer­cises, you will achieve an under­stand­ing of layer attrib­utes, mas­ter pages, guides and mar­gins, color def­i­n­i­tion, and linked graphic and multi-media formats.

Advanced Adobe Photoshop®

This one-day course is a beyond-the-basics oppor­tu­nity to learn the tricks and tech­niques that max­i­mize the pro­fes­sional poten­tial of Pho­to­shop CS6. The instruc­tor will demon­strate com­plex fea­tures and time­sav­ing actions empow­er­ing par­tic­i­pants to work in an advanced Pho­to­shop environment.

Explore advanced image and color adjust­ments, retouch and repair tech­niques, chan­nel fea­tures and advanced com­posit­ing. Manip­u­late your images on lay­ers using com­plete color con­trol. Gain an under­stand­ing of color man­age­ment, ICC pro­files and print qual­ity con­sis­tency. Learn to man­age your meta­data includ­ing copy­right infor­ma­tion, files and work­flow from within the Adobe Bridge application.

No mate­ri­als are required. Instruc­tion will be demon­strated on a large over­head screen with the hands-on capa­bil­ity to fol­low each step using sup­plied files. You will have the oppor­tu­nity to dis­cuss each stage of the process.

Pre­req­ui­site: Intro­duc­tion to Adobe Pho­to­shop or approval of the instructor.

Intro to Adobe Dreamweaver®

Dreamweaver CS6 makes it pos­si­ble for any­one to cre­ate and upload web pages and sites. This intro­duc­tory course goes step-by-step through the basic tools, pan­els and fea­tures of this dynamic Adobe web application.

Dis­cover links, nav­i­ga­tion tabs and wid­gets. Cre­ate a web slideshow. Learn the essen­tials of CSS, site struc­ture, import­ing images, text, audio and movie clips. You will be guided through the steps nec­es­sary to pub­lish a web­site. Using Dreamweaver, your web design can go live with no html code knowl­edge necessary!

Note: An online web­site is not nec­es­sary for this course; how­ever, to prac­tice, stu­dents may wish to use the indi­vid­ual HSU web account avail­able to all HSU students.


Adobe Project Workshop

Get indi­vid­u­al­ized instruc­tion as you cre­ate — from start to fin­ish — a project of your choice using one or more of the Adobe appli­ca­tions. Cre­ate that newslet­ter tem­plate, com­pany logo, design or dig­i­tal art project you’ve always wanted to begin, but put off when tech­ni­cal ques­tions arose.

Through in-depth indi­vid­ual instruc­tion, the instruc­tor offers years of expe­ri­ence to assist you while you com­plete your indi­vid­ual project.

You will be expected to bring projects to work on in the lab. Project time out­side of class will be nec­es­sary. Projects should be pre-approved by instructor.

Pre­req­ui­site: Com­ple­tion of the intro­duc­tion course in the Adobe soft­ware required, or approval of the instructor.
