Go to class is one of the most popular activities at Spring Preview. This is where tickets are provided to students so they can sit-in on a class in their chosen major. There are many positive comments, like this one from our 2012 survey: “My favorite thing was the class visits, because I got to feel what an actual class environment was like and how people reacted within themselves and with the professors. (I also got to see some of what they were learning!)”

Although students are encouraged to choose a class even if their major is not represented, students are typically disappointed to learn that their major may not be offering classes. The goal is to offer students a seat in a class from every department on Friday. The goal this semester to get information early enough to be able to work with colleges to offer class alternatives to those majors who don’t have classes on Friday.

Faculty, please take two minutes to sign-up your class using this online form (must be logged into HSU gmail), no later than Monday, February 28. The online form is used so that all of the information is collected in one spreadsheet and can be shared between offices.

Please send the HOP office an email with any questions or comments about Go To Class. Thank you for your continued support in showcasing our academics at Spring Preview!

As published in Humboldt State NOW, Jan. 24, 2012

Humboldt State is now offering an online master’s degree in education. The deadline to apply for Fall 2013 classes is Feb. 1.

“We’ve been successful for the past 13 years in serving our local community, but have had an increasing number of requests from folks further away who would like to participate in this program,” said Associate Professor Eric Van Duzer. “Our new format allows anyone who would like to earn their degree from HSU to do so.”

HSU’s M.A. in Education is a generalist degree with evening classes for working teachers. Students complete eight core courses and specialize in one of four areas: administrative services, curriculum and instruction, special education or special studies.

The degree emphasizes close faculty and student interaction. “One of the things that sets our program apart is the intense level of support from faculty and HSU’s strong sense of community,” Van Duzer said.

The program focuses on broadening students’ understanding of the theoretical and methodological aspects of teaching and administration. They are expected to articulate what they know, ask questions about their practice and relate their practice to professional literature.

The M.A. in Education is the latest HSU program to go online. Last year, the School of Education launched an online credential in Secondary Education. The Office of Extended Education also offers online certificates in faculty preparation and exercise nutrition.

For more information, call Linda McMaster at (707) 826-3729 or e-mail at mcmaster@humboldt.edu.

You may have heard that HSU now offers additional support to our first year students. The Residential Academic Mentoring Program (RAMP) provides each first year student with academically focused peer mentoring throughout their whole freshmen year. The program kicked off last August and we are working to improve the program everyday. The biggest factor in having a successful program is making sure that we have quality peer mentors who can assist new students. We would love to have your assistance in the mentor selection process.

RAMP has officially opened our application for the 2013-2014 academic year. We are currently seeking students to serve as peer mentors for our incoming freshmen class. Our plan is to hire nearly 50 new mentors to help grow our program and provide additional support to our growing student body. It would be wonderful if your department could help us promote this opportunity to the students you work with. If there are student leaders you know of please spread the word about this on campus employment opportunity. If there are students you would like us to personally reach out to, please fill out this short form available at: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JHKFTYB. We will make an effort to contact each of your nominees to let them know about this excellent opportunity. Applications are open until February 2, 2013 and can be found online at www.humboldt.edu/reslife/apply. Listed below are brief descriptions of the various positions open with RAMP.
