Finding Resources and Empowerment through Education
Finding Resources and Empowerment through Education (F.R.E.E.) strives to provide leadership by encouraging advocacy, values, and customs that will lead to the continued recruitment, retention and graduation of low-income and undocumented students. As students of Humboldt State we have noticed that there isn’t resources for students who are low-income and who fall under the AB540 category. F.R.E.E’s goals for this semester are to make this institution a AB-540 friendly/aware campus.
About the Club
In the past FREE has organized workshops to help high school students pursuit a higher education by providing a college readiness conference. FREE has attended an AB 540 Conference in order to better understand what resources and networks can act as support systems for marginalized students; with this knowledge FREE hopes to make HSU an AB 540 a friendly campus. FREE has facilitated workshops educating our HSU campus and community about : -Deferred Action for Children Arrivals (DACA),
– AB 540 – AB 130, – AB 131.FREE also does service for the community twice a month and attends Latin@ Net meetings in order to bridge the gap between HSU and the local community. FREE continues to share knowledge and acts as allies to advocate for underrepresented students.
Fall 2012-Spring 2013
FREE is working tirelessly in order to bring attention to the lack of support to undocumented students. We are doing this through:
——->Building talks with administrators, faculty, and staff ——->Inviting Dolores Huerta as key note speaker to touch on the misrepresentation of communities ——-> Inviting Dr. Zavala to the Institute for Student Success (The Spring 2013 Institute for Student Success will provide staff, faculty, and administrators with information, resources, and strategies useful in supporting a variety of student learning needs and enhancing the success of students from diverse backgrounds. The Spring Institute will include a range of workshops focused on various topics, from creating inclusive campus environments to effective pedagogy.) Title: Leveraging Our Institutional Roles: What Faculty and Staff can do to Advocate for AB 540 StudentsDescription: What are the historical conditions impacting undocumented students today? Why should I advocate for undocumented students? What can I do as a faculty member or staff in advocating for undocumented students at my campus? In this interactive workshop participants will dialogue about key legislation, such as AB 540, AB 130, and AB 131, that directly impacts undocumented students. The workshop explores ways in which faculty can become advocates for AB540 students. Concrete examples derived from the presenter’s experience working in grassroots organizations and as a faculty member at California State University, Fullerton, will be provided.
BIO:
Dr. Zavala is Assistant Professor in the Department of Secondary Education. His research and teaching interests include community organizing, critical pedagogies, and decolonizing research. Since 2005 he has been advocating for undocumented immigrant youth as an integral member of grassroots organizations, which have taken on local campaigns. He is currently Executive Director of the Raza Education Fund (REF), a non-profit organization that has successfully fundraised over $120,000 in scholarships for undocumented students.

Hermanas Unidas Inc. de Humboldt State
♥ HaU Inc. Herstory ♥ In the Spring semester of 1994, five inspiring young women: Zuleyka Heredia, Ricki Robles, Amelia Schustz, Erica Solorzano and Bernadette Vargas came together to establish one of the first Chicana/Latina groups at the University of California, Berkeley. These five women recognized the limited amount of support and resources for Chicana/Latinas on the university campus and resolved to fill the void. These visionary women established the foundation of what has evolved into a recognized organization. Hermanas Unidas combines academics, community service and social activities to unite and support Chicana/Latinas in their quest for higher education, while emphasizing Hermandad. -----Purpose: To reach out to the Chicana/Latina community and provide resources as well as a family networking system through the avenues provided by the three pillars of Hermanas Unidas: ----Academic - Through the emphasis of academics not only do we empower our minds but our future as well. ----Community Service - In the struggle to empower ourselves we must also remember our communities and empower them as well. ------ Social - In stressing Hermandad, a family network is created to foster an environment of mutual respect and unity, while supporting individual interests and talents. ------1) To provide a place where women can come together and be themselves. We accept any and all ideologies. We are a sisterhood attempting to provide a healthy transition to and from the university. ------2) To raise awareness and educate the campus and the community at large about Chicana/Latina issues. --------- Logo: El Quinto Sol, or the fifth sun of the Aztec calendar, represents and signifies change. It exemplifies the search for unity, restoration and purification of personal balance. The symbol chosen to exemplify the spirit of Hermanas Unidas is El Quinto Blossom. It is representative of the group because of the constant change we face as students, as women, as Latinas, as daughters, as sisters, as an organization, but most of all, as individuals. It is the change that empowers us for growth on personal, educational and professional levels. - It Represents the story of a young woman, her face in profile, depicted by the leaf and stem of the logo. This woman is on the path to enlightenment through the pursuit of education, symbolized by the winding stem, which also represents the challenging, yet rewarding road towards personal growth. Her path leads to El Quinto Sol, the fruit of her sacrifice, the sum of her experiences, the rewards of the relationships she has built. This is the story of the Hermana that blossoms into a woman of truth, a stronger woman for having traveled that road. El Quinto Sol remains the focal point of our logo so that we may never forget where we came from and that we may keep clear where we are going together in Hermandad. ---------- Motto: "Poder de la Mujer" is what all Hermanas strive to embody, both as individual women and as an organization. The motto symbolizes the strength and will of each and every Hermana in their quest for higher education, the empowerment of their families and communities, as well as equality in education, the workplace and the rest of society. --------Colors: The official colors of Hermanas Unidas are Blue and Silver. ---------- HaU♥ Statewide Chapters: - Hermanas Unidas consists of a network of over 18 undergraduate chapters all over California an extensive Alumni Association.
About the Club
—————♥ HaU de Humboldt State Herstory ♥
————-♥ Our Herstory ♥
In the fall of 2011, eight determined women set out in search of Hermandad. As part of an under-represented group at Humboldt State these ladies sought to bring together women of common interests in order to built familiar and strong connections. These women decided to establish something that wouldn’t judge or discriminate and sought to provide unity through empowerment. With these goals in mind these women founded a chapter of Hermanas Unidas that filled the void at the Humboldt State Campus. Through academics, community service, and collegial networking Hermanas Unidas hopes to unite and support hermanas along their pursuit of higher education.

Chapters also serve as a forum for advising students about the education programs provided at their institutions while providing opportunities to network with professional educators.
Regional SCTA conferences focus on developing members’ communication skills and leadership skills. These events allow members to meet students from neighboring schools to exchange ides and concerns.
Student California Teachers Association is the largest student organization in California with members on more than 70 campuses. It is led by an elected executive board of student members who provide publications, services and representation within the CTA. SCTA provides MANY benefits to their members including liability insurance and discounts on school supplies, travel, food, etc…
We are a club that is open to all! We want students to come in with questions and ideas about how to make this club a success. We volunteer within our community with things such as charity drives and elementary school fundraisers and we want to do more! If you know of an event coming up that we could help with, come on in and let us know. We also love to team up with other HSU clubs on campus, so if you are part of another club, come in and tell us about it.
We are very focused on helping each other. We can answer questions about classes, the credential program, teachers, and anything else you may want to know. We want to make our time here at HSU a success so that when we go off to become teacher’s, we are prepared!
Membership Qualifications

HSU Men's CRew
The HSU Men's Crew team provides a unique environment through the sport of rowing that allows male students from Humboldt State to compete competitively in the collegiate rowing conferences on the West Coast. The people on the team get in the best shape of their lives while making lasting binding friendships through the team-building experience rowing provides.
About the Club
The HSU Men’s Crew team was founded in 1975. Since then we have helped bring the rowing world to the North Coast and Humboldt State, and throughout the years we have brought many gold medals home. The most recent was winning the Novice Lightweight 4 at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships in 2010. We race throughout the school year, with 1-2 Head Races in the fall and 5-6 Sprint Races March-April, racing across the West Coast. We work hard and are a competitive team, but we also have a lot of fun. Come check us out! If you aren’t sure if you have the time come out anyways. We often work around our team-members schedules so as many people as possible can participate. The team has about 25 active participants currently, giving us a lot of opportunities at races to compete competitively with larger teams.
Membership Qualifications
We are looking for students interested in athletics who are willing to work hard and be committed to the sport. There are no try-outs to participate, but we are seeking guys who are in reasonable physical shape. Girls 150lbs and under can also join to be coxswains for the team! No rowing experience is needed, and if you have rowing experience you’ll get the opportunity to race novice again!
How to Join
Show up to carpool at Library Circle at 5 and tell people you’re there to check out the team. Once you’ve checked out practice you’ll have to sign up for the class through student center and fill out insurance information.

¡CouRaGeouS!
¡CouRaGeouS! is the official club for the department of Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (CRGS) at Humboldt State University!

In any CRGS course, we learn much about theories for creating a more just world for all in the context of social justice. While knowing theory is an important asset for social justice, we recognize that transforming this theory into action is a valuable practice for creating a more just world.

At ¡CouRaGeouS!, we participate in community and campus activism. Whether it be organizing a workshop or an event, volunteering, or teaming up with other campus clubs or community organizations—this is our time to be social activists! We also recognize that activism is not simply just organizing, it also takes the shape of taking a CRGS course (or courses!) and attending events.
And, most importantly, ¡CouRaGeouS! is a place to build community! We are a place for student activists to come together for support and understanding. ¡CouRaGeouS! is not only a place for activism, it is also a place to engage in active dialogue and to share our personal experiences.

TRiO Alumni Association
As a Club at Humboldt State University, we believe it is important to help, guide, and mentor TRiO students currently enrolled in High School, while at the same time building relationships with the community as well as in our TRiO group. "TRIO began as part of President Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty. The Educational Opportunity Act of 1964 established an experimental program known as Upward Bound. Then, in 1965, the Higher Education Act created Talent Search. Finally, another program, Special Services for Disadvantaged Students (later known as Student Support Services), was launched in 1968. Together, this “trio” of federally-funded programs encouraged access to higher education for low-income students."

Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc
National Herstory
National HerstoryLocal Herstory
On October 2000, six women came together to discuss the possibility of establishing a Latina based sorority at Humboldt State University. These six women shared the same vision and quest as the Most Honorable Founding Mothers and Charters. At the time of their meeting, there was only one other Hispanic/ Latino group on campus. Noticing the lack of Latino representation at HSU, these women formed the Interest group of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. and began meeting on a regular basis. On January 26, 2001, the Interest Group of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. received word that they had been accepted as a local sorority on campus. The Petitioning Group of GAO traveled to Milwaukee, WI in April 2002 to make a presentation to the National B.O.D. and became the Charter Colony, the first in California. Upon their return, six hardworking and motivated ladies, who are known today as the Charter Class, had the same vision and joined them in their quest. On October 2002 all the members of the Charter Colony went to Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX and once again, they made a presentation to the National B.O.D. and were initiated as the Pi Chapter of Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority, Inc. on October 25, 2002. Graduation Pledge Alliance
The Graduation Pledge of Social and Environmental Responsibility is a campus tradition that started at HSU in 1987 and has since spread to campuses around the world. The Pledge is a simple personal vow to consider the social and environmental consequences of the decisions that we make:
“I pledge to explore and take into account the social and environmental consequences of any job I consider and will try to improve these aspects of any organizations for which I work.”

The Women's Resource Center
Because relations of domination affect all people; we at the Women’s Resource Center aim to provide the tools, support and safe spaces for empowerment and for people to dismantle systems of power, privilege and oppression. Simultaneously we are transforming our communities; as well as acknowledging and embracing diverse perspectives and strategies that promote collective visions of liberation. Vision Statement We at the HSU WRC envision a world in which: 1. We are actively addressing privilege and oppression within our organization and working to create a space for all people to cooperate on equal grounds. 2. We encourage and value feminist and social justice ideals, dialogues, and expressions. 3. We are connecting with other social justice organizations, on campus and elsewhere, to build coalitions and community. 4. We value and respect difference and the multiplicity of identity, recognizing that the health of our organization depends on it. 5. We are sharing knowledge and resources with communities concerning issues of race, class, gender, sexuality, and the environment. 6. We advocate the experience and enjoyment of positive sexuality and freedom of sexual expression, as well as both the affirmation of parenting and the affirmation of those who choose not to. 8. We are working towards alternatives to capitalism: Honoring individuals and communities that are creating autonomous spaces for liberation. 9. We experience the freedom to create, love, and enjoy both life and one another.

Beta Sigma Epsilon
In January of 2000 the founders noticed there was a disproportionately high dropout rate among the Native American students. In there efforts to address the retention and enrollment rates among Native American students in higher education they created an organization. This organization is a collegiate fraternity, called Beta Sigma Epsilon (ΒΣΕ. ΒΣΕ is an organization that uses the existing “Greek Life” institution, found prevalently throughout American campuses, to address issues among Native American students in the campus setting. ΒΣΕ was created as one way to address Native American student issues in college. The vision for ΒΣΕ is to develop and support members through activities and through these activities, benefit and promote the advancement of Native people. For this, the mission of ΒΣΕ was created: The Fraternal Order of Beta Sigma Epsilon has been created to serve the Native American community through the multifaceted development of young men. Members will strive for excellence in brotherhood, academia, profession, community service, and cultural awareness, through the earnest study and practice of leadership, unity, prudence, determination, and truth. The Fraternal Order of Beta Sigma Epsilon will serve as a safe, supportive, transitional environment that will provide members with opportunities, resources, tools, and experiences necessary for success in collegiate life and beyond. Members will share their own unique experiences, perspectives, and ideas for the development and advancement of individual members, the fraternal order, academia, the professions, and the Native American community. Lance Britton (Wailaki), Brandon Price (Navajo), Jeff Hodge Jr. (Hupa), and Eric Zeldin founded us, the Delta Chapter at Humboldt State University, in the spring of 2007. Then in 2009 were officially recognized through the school and declared a part of the Greek system. Beta Sigma Epsilon is a young and still growing fraternity. It’s a great opportunity to be a part of something and say you had a hand in making this fraternity a strong and successful organization.

When we qualify for the playoffs, our season can be extended as far out as the National Championships at the end of April.

Members of the team train 2 hours each day, 4 days each week: M/W are condtioning sessions; T/Th are coaching sessions. In the Fall players must also lift 2 hours each week on their own. We take great pride in our group and devote much time to its success and orientation. As part of the interest group, potential members have the opportunity to interact with each other, and sisters of Lambda Theta Alpha, on a social and professional basis. Being in the interest group requires dedication and a sincere desire to not only learn about our sorority and diverse culture but to effect change in the community through service and activism. By working together in fundraising and community service activities, a close knit bond is formed that makes the transition into our sisterhood a unique and memorable experience. Past interest groups have attained high levels of success and have gained essential insight as to what Lambda Theta Alpha is an organization…a Sisterhood…based on Unity, Love and Respect… and dedicated to the empowerment of minorities and the universal woman through her education, a love of culture, the disenfranchised and her surrounding communities.

About the Club
The Entrepreneurs Club is an on campus resource for students, faculty, and community members who have passionate ideas and need help getting started. The E-Club is an interdisciplinary club, all majors are welcome because anyone can be an entrepreneur.
Throughout the year we enjoy hosting events such as, article discussions, speakers from all over the country, and getting involved in community projects.

Last year we attended a Net Impact conference in Portland Oregon. Net Impact is “a nonprofit membership organization for students and professionals interested in using business skills in support of various social and environmental causes. It serves both a professional organization and one of the largest student organizations among MBAs in the world.” This was a great opportunity for our club to learn more about social entrepreneurship and explore what other students and businesses are doing to attain this goal.

In 2010, through the Institute for Entrepreneurship Education, we co-organized HSU’s first ever Symposium on Social Entrepreneurship. It was an all day event with speakers and workshops available to the students and community members!
This year we hope to expand our club and continue to become more involved on campus and in the community .

THE LEGACY
The Legacy means a "gift left in a will and things handed down by a predecessor". The title of The Legacy was given to this club because it was established so there would be a strong positive fully functioning organization already at Humboldt State. So women of color could come to this school and see what has already been accomplished and continuing to be accomplished. This club was meant to be literally a legacy passed down from strong sisters to more strong sisters.
