Rock Climbing Series

Spring Semester

The Rock Climbing Series package includes three classes: Introduction to Rock Climbing, Intro to Top Rope & Anchoring, and Introduction to Sport Lead & Traditional Climbing.

Outdoor Program Fee: $135 HSU Students • $180 All Others / Indoor Program Fee: $70 HSU Students • $105 All Others
Notes: 
Indoor Courses may be substituted for a discounted fee.

Introduction to Rock Climbing (Level 1) Indoor

February 4 - May 4

This course is designed as an introduction to the sport of rock climbing with an emphasis on climbing for enjoyment and health. The course will cover the basic skills needed for technical rock climbing, to include safety considerations, climbing techniques, use of equipment, basic knots, belaying and rappelling.

Program Fee: 
$10 HSU Students • $18 All Others
Program Fee Includes: 
Instruction, all rock climbing equipment and permit fees
Day and Time: 
Tuesdays • 5:30 - 7:30pm • Sundays • 12:00 - 2:00pm

Climbing Performance

February 8

Learn how to refine climbing technique, mental approach, and training strategies to increase overall climbing performance. This skills clinic is aimed at helping climbers realize performance gains with maximum efficiency by working on each of these areas separately. Instruction will be provided via demonstration, discussion, and practice of core principles and techniques. This is the perfect course to help you supercharge your routine and break through that plateau no matter your ability or level.

Introduction to Top Rope & Anchoring (Level 2) Indoor

March 1

This course provides an introduction to top rope climbing and is designed as a continuation of the introduction rock climbing course. Topics discussed will include an in-depth overview of rock climbing safety equipment and understanding of the principles of top rope anchor systems. This course will cover knots for climbers, building and evaluating anchor systems, rappelling on steep terrain and improved climbing technique.

Prerequisite: 
Prospective participants must be top rope belayed certified at the Student Recreation Center or have instructor approval

Introduction to Sport Lead & Traditional Climbing (Level 3) Indoor

This course provides an introduction to sport lead climbing as well as traditional climbing and is designed as a continuation of the top rope & anchoring course. Topics covered will include advanced anchor building, lead belaying, rope management, single and multi-pitch descending methods and confidence building strategies.

Prerequisite: 
Prospective participants must be top rope belayed certified at the Student Recreation Center or have instructor approval

Self Rescue Clinic

May 3

Come learn self-rescue skills no climber should be without. In this clinic we will focus on awareness and prevention as well as effective techniques to deal with a problem. During the clinic you will learn preventative thinking, how to back up rappels and belays, escape a belay setup, ascend to aid an injured climber, and assist your partner from above. Please bring your own personal gear as practicing with your own equipment will better prepare you for real situations. Essential equipment will be provided if you don’t have you own.
