ISSHINRYU KARATE

If you are looking for an activity that provides a workout while learning a practical form of self-defense, this may be for you. Beginners are welcome! Isshinryu Karate is a classical style of Okinawan Karate. Participants learn basic forms (kata), sparring techniques, and a direct, effective form of self-defense. Robert Sherman, eighth degree black belt and chief instructor, has taught Isshinryu Karate continually at HSU since 1979. Classes are taught throughout the academic year (including summer) and are open to all community members. This class is taught to all levels and studnets may earn rank. Several students have earned the rank of black belt throughout the 30 plus years of instruction. Other instructors include Eric Lien, sixth degree black belt, Nicole Doan, third degree black belt and Jamie Garrison, first degree black belt.

TAE KWON DO

Traditional Tae Kwon Do is an extremely effective Martial Art for self defense, self-discipline and self empowerment. Training will increase your cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength, and flexibility while teaching you effective self-defense techniques in realistic situations. Tae Kwon Do is world renowned for having the most dynamic and explosive kicking techniques of any Martial Art. Coupled with its focus on realistic self-defense, and the use of grappling, joint-locking, chocking and hand-striking techniques, traditional Tae Kwon Do will provide you with the skills and confidence to handle any situation. Whether you are new to the Martial Arts, or want to train for your black belt, our proven method of instruction will help you succeed. Students will have an opportunity to test for their first belt at the end of the semester and can attend some additional classes at Sun Yi's Academy of Tae Kwon Do here in Arcata.
Program Fee: $40

Note: An additional $20 will be collected at the first class meeting to cover the cost of the uniform.
