River Kayaking

Our river kayaking classes are designed to help our participants learn kayaking at their own pace. Introduction to Kayak Fundamentals is for first-time kayakers who want to learn the basics of handling a river kayak on flat water. The Kayak Roll Session will place a special emphasis on learning the Eskimo roll. Introduction to River Kayaking is designed for a beginning river experience. The Intermediate River Kayaking 1 course extends the river experience, building your confidence and skills. The Intermediate Kayaking 2 course teaches more advance paddle techniques on a class three stretch of river.

RIVER KAYAKING SERIES

The River Kayaking Series Includes: Introduction to Kayak Fundamentals, Kayak Roll Session and Introduction to River Kayaking.

RAFTING AND RIVER KAYAKING THE SCENIC MIDDLE FORK OF THE EEL RIVER (4 Day, 3 Night Adventure)

May 20 - 23

Get ready for one of the most amazing wild and scenic stretches of river around. This four night, five day trip will give you an experience of a lifetime kayaking down 53 miles of the Eel River with little to no civilization around. This remote trip will give you the thrill of boating through Class III whitewater, intermixed with serene, relaxing sections ideal for swimming and viewing wildlife, and camping on beautiful river beaches. Your camping gear will be brought down river with the support rafts accompanying us on this trip. If you have friends who do not kayak, they can join us on one of our rafts and get the same experience. A 20 percent discount will be given to graduating students, as a gift for their hard work and accomplishment!

Mandatory Pre-trip Meeting: Thursday May 16, 6:00 pm, Recreation and Wellness Center Room 108 (Drop-In Lounge)

Program Fee: $269 HSU Students, $309 All Others

Program Fee Includes: instruction, permit fees and river equipment, transportation, and dinners

INTRODUCTION TO KAYAK FUNDAMENTALS

Option I: June 9
Option II: July 21

This pool based course will provide a fun and safe environment to learn the base line skills no kayaker should be without. Topics will include boat anatomy, kayak fit, and essential equipment. Our experienced guides will support your introduction to a variety of paddle strokes, boat handling, bracing, safety considerations with an emphasis on injury prevention, and then spend the majority of the time working on self and assisted rescues after a capsize. Time permitting, kayakers will have an opportunity to learn and practice the skills necessary for an Eskimo roll.

Program Fee: $40

Program Fee Includes: instruction, kayaks and all necessary gear

Day and Time: Sunday, 4:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Location: Arcata Community Pool

Registration Deadline: Wednesday before each course

 

KAYAK ROLL SESSION

June 16 & 23

This course will initially concentrate on learning improved bracing, from there we will progress to Eskimo roll instruction. This will be accomplished with a combination of individual instruction and practice time at the Arcata Community Pool. If one of these dates doesn't work with your schedule please contact us about private kayak roll instruction.

Program Fee: $40

Program Fee Includes: instruction, kayaks and all necessary gear plus instructional materials

Day and Time: Sundays, 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

INTRODUCTION TO RIVER KAYAKING

July 13

This course on beginning whitewater kayaking will cover the basics and give you an overview of river travel and safety. The outing includes an exciting and informative day of kayaking on one of the local rivers, the exact location depending on flows. You will learn to read water and understand basic river orientation. Instruction will cover eddy turns, peel outs, river ferrying and paddling techniques. Additional activities may include a river safety section that involves the use of basic river safety equipment specifically adapted for kayaking situations.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Kayak Fundamentals and Kayak Roll Session, or instructor approval

Program Fee: $55

Program Fee Includes: instruction, kayaks, river gear and permit fees
