Rock Climbing Classes

These courses offer climbers an excellent way to develop new skills or refine old ones. Through a steady progression of skill development, participants will gain a solid foundation of safe and technical rock climbing skills. Registrants receive a 50% discount on rock climbing shoes rentals through Center Activities!

ROCK CLIMBING SERIES

The Rock Climbing Series package includes three classes: Introduction to Rock Climbing, Introduction to Top Rope and Anchoring, and Introduction to Sport Lead and Traditional Climbing.

Outdoor Program Fee: $127 HSU Students, $172 All Others
Indoor Program Fee: $68 HSU Students, $106 All Others

 

INTRODUCTION TO ROCK CLIMBING

This course is designed as an introduction to the sport of rock climbing with an emphasis on climbing for enjoyment and health. This course will cover the basic skills needed for technical rock climbing, including safety considerations, climbing techniques, use of equipment, basic knots, belaying and rappelling.

Mandatory Pre-trip Meeting: Thursday, May 30, 6:00 pm, Recreation and Wellness Center Room 108 (Drop-In Lounge)

Program Fee: $55

Program Fee Includes: instruction, all rock climbing equipment and permit fees. Transportation will be by carpool.

INTRODUCTION TO TOP ROPE AND ANCHORING

This course provides an introduction to outdoor top rope climbing and is designed as a continuation of the Beginning Rock Climbing course. Topics discussed will include an in-depth overview of rock climbing safety equipment and understanding of the principles of top rope anchor systems. This course will cover knots for climbers, building and evaluating anchor systems, rappelling on steep terrain and improved climbing technique.

Prerequisite: Prospective students must be top rope belayed certified at the Students Recreation Center or have instructor approval.

Indoor Day, Time and Location: Saturday, 12:00 pm - 5:00 pm, Student Recreation Center

Mandatory Pre-trip Meeting (Outdoor Only):

Program Fee: Indoor - $34 HSU Students, $49 All 0thers
Outdoor - $49 HSU Students, $64 All Others

INTRODUCTION TO SPORT LEAD AND TRADITIONAL CLIMBING

This course provides an introduction to sport lead climbing as well as traditional climbing and is designed as a continuation of a top rope and anchoring course. Topics covered will include advanced anchor building, lead belaying, rope management, single and multi-pitch descending methods and confidence building strategies.

Prerequisite: Prospective participants must be top rope belayed certified at the Student Recreation Center or have instructor
