Introduction to River Kayaking

This weekend kayak expedition is to one of our beautiful local rivers and will create a base foundation for river kayaking. You will learn river dynamics, eddy turns, peel outs, river ferrying, river rescues and safety and practice all the skills learned in the prior classes on the river.

Kayak Roll Session or instructor approval

Introduction to Sport Lead & Traditional Climbing (Level 3) Outdoor

This course provides an introduction to sport lead climbing as well as traditional climbing and is designed as a continuation of the top rope & anchoring course. Topics covered will include advanced anchor building, lead belaying, rope management, single and multi-pitch descending methods and confidence building strategies.

Prerequisite: 
Prospective participants must be top rope belayed certified at the Student Recreation Center or have instructor approval

Are you ready to get out of the whitewater and surf real waves? Join us for the continuation of the Introduction to Surfing class with a progression of skills from paddling out to the line-up to negotiating the waves. Surf gear is provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own Transportation will be by carpool.

Eel River Slough and Cock Robin Island Tour

Join us for a paddle on the Eel River Slough and Cock Robin Island located just west of Loleta. This is an area rich in wildlife as it is influenced by both fresh water flowing from the Eel River and by saltwater coming in and out with the tides.

Backpacking the Trinity Alps

Clear streams, grassy meadows, waterfalls, swimming holes, alpine lakes await in the Trinity Alps Wilderness Area. This backpacking trip offers the experience of back country exploration and the opportunity to meet other backpackers. The trip will consist of moderate high country terrain and cover 10-12 miles round trip. The specific trailhead and destination will be determined at the pre-trip meeting.

Join us for a day of adventure on one of the North Coast’s premier stretches of Class III whitewater, intermixed with serene, relaxing sections ideal for swimming and wildlife viewing. The river we choose will be dependent on river flows and conditions.

Self Rescue Clinic

May 3

Come learn self-rescue skills no climber should be without. In this clinic we will focus on awareness and prevention as well as effective techniques to deal with a problem. During the clinic you will learn preventative thinking, how to back up rappels and belays, escape a belay setup, ascend to aid an injured climber, and assist your partner from above. Please bring your own personal gear as practicing with your own equipment will better prepare you for real situations. Essential equipment will be provided if you don’t have you own.

Prerequisite: 
Prospective participants must be top rope belayed certified at the Student Recreation Center or have instructor approval.

Swiftwater Rescue Technician Unit 1 (SRTUI)

May 18 - 20

The SRT curriculum is specifically designed for fire fighters, rescue teams and professional rescuers who need the best swiftwater training available! The course is NFPA compliant and meets the required elements for personnel reaching toward Technician Level Certification. The course is very active in the water and is suitable for rescuers with no water rescue experience. The course also offers experienced rescuers the opportunity to develop their skills and push their personal limits on and off the water with realistic rescue scenarios, self-rescue challenges, and lots of hands-on interactive rescues and experiences.
