Kayak Basics & Safety

October 5

This pool based course will provide a fun and safe environment to learn the base line skills no kayaker should be without. Our experienced guides will support your introduction to a variety of paddle strokes, boat handling, bracing, and safety considerations with an emphasis on injury prevention, and then spend the majority of the time working on self and assisted rescues after a capsize. Time permitting, kayakers will have an opportunity to learn and practice the skills necessary for a combat roll.

NAUI SCUBA Diver Course

October 6 - November 16
The NAUI SCUBA Diver Course is a five week program of instruction in the safe use of SCUBA equipment and water skills. The class consists of Saturday classroom lectures at the Alpha Training Group facility in Fairhaven, and Monday night pool sessions at the Arcata Community Pool. The course concludes with an open water dive in Mendocino over a weekend. Students will be required to provide a set of personal dive equipment and wetsuit for the open water portion of the course. Student equipment requirements are discussed in detail during the lecture seminar. All participants must fill out a medical evaluation prior to course. Evaluations are available at the front desk. Knots Seminar

Outdoor enthusiasts use an assortment of ropes and knots for outdoor skills. Many of these same knots can be useful for a variety of everyday uses, ranging from camping, climbing, sailing, loading vehicles, and more. This seminar will cover various knots including hitches, bends, loops and other important knots. If you would like to have the mystery taken out of knot tying, this class is for you!

Wine Tasting 101

Ever wonder what swirling wine in the glass was about? What do the “legs” really mean? This two hour class will show you how to understand and appreciate wine. To be held at Libation on the plaza in Arcata. This is the first class of their four class wine appreciation series and can be used for that series.

Making Chocolate Dipped Strawberries

October 11
Learn to make chocolate covered strawberries the easy way from a professional Chocolatier. Sandra Nakashima, founder and co-owner of Drakes Glen Creations will show you how to make artisan dipped strawberries. You will learn how to temper real chocolate, then dip strawberries and decorate. You will leave the class with the berries you dip and a deeper understanding of what goes into making chocolates. This is a fun class and no previous chocolate skill is needed.

Introduction to Archery

October 11

Introduction to Archery is open to archers of every skill level. This course is designed to introduce beginning archers to the basic fundamentals of the sport in accordance with the National Training System; this includes: proper posture and alignment, aiming, the release and follow through. This class will utilize the hands-on application of using a bow and arrow in conjunction with demonstrations and lectures. This course will also discuss the proper care and use of archery equipment.
