The Outdoor Center
The Center Activities Office is the main facility for the Outdoor Adventures, Aquatic Classes and Leisure programs. As well as being the focal point for program registration, the facility also includes outdoor rentals and an outdoor adventure library. The Outdoor Center is located in the Recreation and Wellness Center, right below the West Gym. During regularly scheduled HSU classes, the Outdoor Center is open Monday through Friday from 10 am to 6:30 pm.
Components of Center Activities include:
Outdoor Adventures: Throughout the year one can enjoy an outdoor adventure including backpacking, rock climbing, adventure photography or a skills seminar.
Aquatic Classes: Our aquatic program offers introductory and intermediate courses in sea kayaking, river kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, stand up paddleboarding, and sailing; all which take place on local bays, lagoons, rivers and oceans. The aquatics program also consists of many youth aquatics programs during the summer.
Leisure Activities: This program offers dance, music, karate, pilates, martial arts, stress management, cooking, art, birdwatching and certification courses.
Outdoor Gear Rentals: The rental program is designed to prepare individuals for the outdoors with a variety of equipment.
Outdoor Information: Information on recreational opportunities in Northern California and Oregon is available through maps, brochures and books. Come by and talk with one of Center Activities Outdoor Center staff members if you would like assistance planning your own outings.
Center Activities Outdoor Adventures Leaders: All Outdoor leaders have strong backgrounds in the specific outdoor activity that they teach. Each leader must have a minimum of First Aid and CPR certification. Many outdoor leaders have skills, training and experience that are necessary for specific activities such as back-country medicine and rescue, river rescue, and aquatics and rock climbing certifications. Center Activities Leisure Classes Instructors: Leisure Classes instructors bring with them many years of personal experience and extensive knowledge that they share with their classes. Many of our leisure instructors work professionally in the fields that they teach and have many years of experience with Center Activities.
