Claude Gay (1800-1873)

Naturalista francés, arribó a Chile en 1828 para trabajar como profesor. En 1829 inició su labor de reconocimiento del territorio nacional. Un año después comenzó su trabajo más importante al suscribir un contrato con el gobierno. En éste, el sabio se comprometió a hacer un viaje científico por todo el país con el objeto de investigar la historia natural de Chile y todo aquello que contribuyera a dar a conocer sus productos.

Luego de recorrer todo Chile, en 1848, inició la publicación de su Historia física y política de Chile. Desde entonces y hasta 1871, aparecieron los treinta volúmenes de su obra compuesta por ocho tomos destinados a la Historia; ocho a la Botánica; ocho a la Zoología; dos sobre la agricultura nacional, dos de documentos históricos, y los dos que corresponden al Atlas que completan su texto.

Por sus trabajos en favor de la ciencia y de Chile fue reconocido con la Legión de Honor en el grado de caballero por sus servicios eminentes a Francia, y se le concedió la nacionalidad chilena por gracia. Además fue admitido en la Academia de Ciencias de Francia en 1856.

A French naturalist, Claudio Gay, arrived in Chile in 1828 in order to work as a professor. In 1829 begin his explorations of the national territory. A year later he started his most important work that was part of a contract with the Chilean Government. For this contract Gay committed to begin a scientific journey through the country with the purpose of studying the natural history of Chile, and all that contribute to products Chile produces.

In 1848, after traveling through Chile he initiated the publication of the Physical and Political History of Chile. From this moment until 1871 appeared thirty volumes: eight on History, eight on Botany, eight on Zoology, two on national agriculture, two on historical documents, and two that correspond to the Atlas.

Due to his work in favor of the sciences and Chile, Gay was awarded the Legion of Honor as a Knight for his relevant services to France, and was also given the Chilean nationality. In addition in 1856 he was admitted to the France Academy of Sciences.
